"What can I do with 10 milliwatts?"

So you have just finished the assembly of your Genesis G59 transceiver. Knowing that the output power is just 10 milliwatts, you are now ready to rush to the assembly of the GPA10 amplifier.

Please hold your horses - by jumping ahead, you will miss the most exciting bit: the enjoyment of making one and two way contacts at milli-power level!

Yes, this is the best kept secret of ham radio!

And here is the good news: you don't even need a high gain HF antenna on the top of a 40m tower because even a simple resonant dipole or vertical will do just fine.

Ten milliwatts is really not much output power. It is just one hundredth of 1Watt ! Yet under the right circumstances, a 10mW HF signal can be heard and decoded many kilometers away.

But don't take my word for it. You need to try it to believe it!

Here are just a few reports received from fellow Genesis G59 owners who went on air running a bare G59 transceiver.

The most efficient and completely unbiased means of on-air testing is WSPR. Indeed, many Genesis owners have fun running this mode.

Johnny, AC0BQ sent his WSPR log showing his 10 milliwatt WSPR reception reports. These are UNIQUE calls who copied him in just 4 days on 40, 30 and 20m band. His best reception report comes from WB6RQN 2,176 km away. Jerry is using a cross dipole antenna!

A few days later, AC0BQ managed to cross the pond - twice! Two way-WSPR with LX2GT was on 40m. Distance: 7,671 Km

Another report comes from Kirk, N4KWO who pushes his 10 miliwatts into a multiband vertical antenna. Again, all unique reports.

Bruce, KF1Z located on the North-East coast of the US managed to bounce his 10 milliwatts over the Atlantic. G7WBY 5,237 km away got his signals on 20m band. Bruce's antenna is a 75 meter dipole, at 60 feet, broadside E/W.

Blessed with a clean shot over the Pacific, yours truly was delighted to see his 10 mW reception report from W5OLF, received an hour before sunset on 30m band. This is a solid 13,306 Km path over salt water! Antenna: inverted V with apex at 12m above ground!

Quite frankly, transmitting at a miliwatt level is probably the most exciting aspect of low power operation. Imagine what will be possible once sunspots are back!

10mW two-way JT65 QSO: VK2DX - ZL3IN 2,143 Km

After a successful test on 30m WSPR with 10mW and numerous reports received from ZL3IN, I sent an email to Paul, ZL3IN asking him to pay attention to my 10mW signal on JT65.

Later that evening, he answered my CQ call and two-way JT65 QSO was completed in just a few minutes. Distance: 2,143 Km.

Paul was running 1W into a dipole slopping from 10m to 5m. His signal was about 20dB stronger than mine but copy on his end was flawless, from -19 to -13dB !!

Note the lines on the right side of the screen: these are WSPR signals, easily detectable / visible. These guys would be equally readable on JT65 as well!

In my opinion, the only challenge with two way JT65 is in making the other guy interested in answering your call (if you are CQing). Or if you are replying to CQ, in picking a time when no one else is calling! He may see your weak signal and not bother with it, but QSO is definitely possible.

Of course, US / EU stations will have a much greater chance of milliwatt QSO due to higher activity.

Any station with a signal of -5dB or better at your end should be able to copy you without much problem! Yes, this estimate even takes into account a threshold of a few dBs.

I would expect to see your 10mW reports in the very near future. Go for it, it's doable even with a simple wire antenna at a very modest height.
